At the north end of town, along U.S. 27 (Main Street) sits The Graveyard, also known as the Old Cemetery.  It contains graves from the 1780's to the early 1900's. It is said to be very haunted, with the ghost of a Civil War soldier on horseback riding through the cemetery.  While we cannot validate the appearance of this lone horseman, we can point out that Captain William S. "Whip" Rogers, killed at Augusta on September 27th during the Kentucky Campaign, is buried here.  It was the only burial ground in Cynthiana from 1793 to 1868. It is located on four acres deeded to the city by Robert Harrison, owner of land on which Cynthiana founded. Samuel January, first Mayor, and other prominent early citizens are buried here. The first school in city, Harrison Academy, was situated in the southeast corner of this plot.
